There are many open source software out there that offers great and quality performance according to its field of usage. Some may not be as good expensive software but there are many open source sofware which may be compared to the performance of some expensive software.
Almost everything we need now involves money, but there are some offering their services for free. Open source software doesn’t just mean access the source code but you can granted access to distribute the source code. There are many cons and pros of using open source software but sometimes using such software can save you a lot of money plus, some open source software are easy to use and has a friendly interface.
Here are some open source software which may be helpful to your personal needs.
Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox
The premier free, open-source browser. Tabs, pop-up blocking, themes, and extensions. Considered by many to be the world's best browser.

Miro Video Converter
Convert any type of video to mp4 or theora. Convert any video for use with iPhone, iPod, Android, etc. Very clean, easy to use interface.

VLC Player
Plays more video files than most players: Quicktime, AVI, DIVX, OGG, and more. Pretty good interface.

Word Processing: Open Office.org
Big, full featured suite of tools for word processing and spreadsheets. Compatible with and a free replacement for Microsoft Word documents. Also supports OpenDocument Format.

Sound and Recording: Audacity
Audacity can record live audio through a microphone or mixer, or digitize recordings from cassette tapes, vinyl records, or minidiscs. With some sound cards, it can also capture streaming audio.
Record from microphone, line input, or other sources.
Dub over existing tracks to create multi-track recordings.
Record up to 16 channels at once (requires multi-channel hardware).
Level meters can monitor volume levels before, during, and after recording.

Photo editing application which they said rivals with Photoshop in features. I haven't tried it yet, just see and try it for yourself.

Filezilla
FileZilla is a fast, reliable, and secure FTP/SFTP client that allows you to transfer files between Web sites and PCs running Windows.
Allows a user to create a list of FTP sites along with their connection data, such as the port number to use, the protocol to use, and whether to use anonymous or normal logon. For normal logon, the username is saved and optionally the password.
